Boatswain Senior Scouts Badge 1958 to 1964
The Boatswain Badge was part of the
Collective series “The Mariner”
To earn this badge a scout must do
the following *
(1) Pass or have passed as Boatswains Mate.
(2) Know the different kinds of canvas, use a palm and needle, make a cringle, sew a flat and round seam, herringbone and make small
repairs to sails.
(3) Make an eye-splice in wire and a hand lead line in any line
available.
(4) Overhaul and repair a set of standing rigging in wire or cordage for
an open sailing boat.
(5) Be able to worm, parcel and serve and make the fo1lowing: Turk’s
head, two kinds of sennit, long splice, chain splice, and be able to point a rope (any method) and
apply West Country and Sailmaker’s
whippings.
(6) Know the different types of purchase tackle and rig a handy-billy.
(7) Make a kitbag or similar article in canvas.
