Air Navigator Senior Scouts Badge 1958 to 1964
The Air Navigator Badge was part of
the Collective series “The Aviator”
To earn this badge a scout must do
the following *
(1) Send and receive a Morse message at Rate 3 (15 letters a minute).
Understand the alphabetical check for numerals.
(2) Understand what is meant by latitude and longitude, and be able to
identify the Plough, Pegasus, Orion, the Pole Star and Cassiopeia.
(3) Understand fully the principles of Magnetic Compass dip, variation
and deviation and be able to convert a true heading to a compass heading and
vice versa. Plot on a map or chart the required track given by the Examiner
and, knowing compass heading, wind velocity, deviation and variation, tell the Examiner
the true heading and drift.
(4) Show knowledge of the conventional signs of an air map or chart, and
landmarks used in cross—country flying.
(5) Show by means of a plot, set
by the Examiner, that he understands dead reckoning.
